The Thursday ‘Slackers’ Windsor ride also leaves (after the morning coffee) from the Coppernose café, across the road from Hampton Court Palace at 9:30am. Average distance is 80km and returns around 1pm.
These mid-week rides were first established by members with a “flexible” approach to work or retired members hence the nickname “Slackers”. The rides nowadays are populated by members from all corners of the club especially when taking holidays or during career gaps. “Slackers” doesn’t necessarily refer to the pace of the ride though!
Like the Park Ride, riders organise themselves into groups of similar pace and like the Park Ride being in the right group increases your enjoyment! There is no intention to drop riders, but it can happen in the faster groups, so riders in these groups need to be self-reliant and be happy to drop to a group behind (there normally are at least two groups).
The route, is normally the classic route but it can vary. How the groups plan to ride e.g. pace, regrouping at junctions, coffee stop (if any!) are all agreed just before departure and depends on who turns up.
There are sections where the pace picks up, on the outward leg, these are the approach into Sunningdale and the section after the Great Park to the Windsor sign and on the return going past the Waterworks to the lights. These aren’t sprints!
Any first timers should make themselves known so they can get the most out of it.
